The old ones had a collective intelligence we never could have understood. They weren’t just smart. For a Xenos beast, they didn’t just react like a caged animal. They planned. The acted their own little roles. They sacrificed themselves to our brutal experimentation, endured the pain, the hellish creations we made from their filthy Xenos carcasses.

We thought we were controlling them. Weaponising then for our own twisted plans. Creating giant mindless slaves, Xenos servitors that would massacre their own kin in the name of the Imperium. Disposable biological knights, and tanks, and dreadnoughts.

How wrong we were. They submitted themselves and endured. They played the role of the good loyal hound, playing dead, rolling over and fetching the stick. We thought we’d broken them, used their monstrous bodies with expunged minds controlled by our technology, to do our bidding, to fulfil our cravings for power.

And when we thought we controlled them, we entwined them with nightmarish mechanics and artillery, only dreamt up by the most twisted genius the mechanicus could muster.

We fed them their own. The ones we butchered, became their gruel. They showed no revulsion in eating their own. We gave them sustenance. We gave them shelter. We thought we had created our salvation to the growing Xenos threats.

We didn’t.

We just created new monsters. More hideous. More ravenous. More capable.
